New ways of working introduced a month ago mean more patients are being seen face-to-face at the four GP surgeries run by Camrose, Gillies & Hackwood (CGH) according to latest figures. These improvements, hailed as ‘promising and positive’ by practice staff, are led by a new digital app called Dr.iQ and a GP-led triage system which aims to get more patients seen on the day.
The new booking system and the roll-out of Dr.iQ are in response to patient feedback calling for faster access and more face-to-face appointments, and dissatisfaction with the previous e-consult digital platform. Since mid-June, all GP appointment requests are triaged by GPs or another member of the clinical team first to make sure patients get the right help as quickly as possible.
These improvements are being implemented at a time of incredibly high demand, with the practice receiving almost 1,000 calls a day on average over the past four weeks.
The latest figures from the practice show:
Claire Osborne, practice manager, said: “The new systems are looking promising and positive, and it’s great to have increased the number of face-to-face appointments already. We know its early days, but hopefully patients will see that we are responding to what they want, which is more advice, more quickly.”
Another innovation implemented last month is referred to as ‘team of teams’ – the creation of five teams within each practice consisting of a GP, advanced nurse practitioner, care navigator, clinical pharmacist, physiotherapist, paramedic, physician associate and healthcare assistant. A patient is assigned to one of these teams.
When a patient requests an appointment, they will be booked in to see a member of their designated team. This team will already be familiar with their history, and their named GP will oversee their whole experience and treatment.
Jane May, Regional Manager, said: “The benefits of Dr.iQ have been great for our patients, and also for our staff. It has only been live for less than a month but patients are benefiting from rapid help without having to travel in, and more face-to-face appointments available for other patients.”
“We appreciate it can be difficult adapting to new technology but we believe this is a huge improvement on the e-consult system which our patients told us they didn’t like. We really appreciate the feedback from our patients and have published additional guidance to support our patients – please don’t hesitate to contact us with queries.”
The team has put together a helpful FAQ around their proactive response to patient requests for easier access and more on-the-day appointments.
